Power is Critical to Understanding the Difficulties Managers Confront Essay

Power is Critical to Understanding the Difficulties Managers Confront when Seeking to Manage qualifying - Essay ExampleAuthority in a traditional organisation may be alternated for power but when organisational aims are not stipulated unanimously by those who matter in the organisational set up and adhered to by the lower ranks create power situations. Such situations may present dicey legal cover with assumption means of control as the response of juniors in the hierarchy may not be taken rightly when power is used. It could be planned exponentiation or distractive involvement. Buckley has provided a provisional definition of power as Control or influence over the actions of others to promote ones goals without their consent, against their will or without their knowledge or understanding (see Grimes 1978, p. 727). An important feature of power is the stress on private aim orientation in stead of together-goal orientation. Power, according to Gamson, is potential partisans, which can be defined as, that set of actors who for a given decision are affected by the outcome in a significant way, (See Grimes 1978, p. 727). The impact of partisans and the counter-impact of authority are normally named as power. Partisans attempt to impress upon the authority their side of the issue and its resolution. The notion of veer is basic and concurrent in the thinking of management scholars on organisations. The literature on strategic sort stresses on the need to adjust to the changing risks and opportunities of the new business environments. They also point out that such change is not recurrent in the occurred extent or direction required. Organisations need to develop this capacity for change to promote learning. There has been vast study on transformational leadership particularly and leadership generally that shows the seriousness of the topic for management purpose. The issue of change is more relevant also for practitioners, which is evident from the volume of boo ks promulgated on change management. Even then it is argued that both scholars and practitioners do not possess enough knowledge of and theoretical mechanism for change. To an extent, this failure to propound a theory may be because of various established perspectives or mechanisms (Ford and Ford, 1994). Change agents play a critical role in an organisation by fate in transformation process. Change agents need to be on the right path to steer an organisation on the road to positive change. Some of the of import inputs of change are depicted in the chart below (Evans, 2010). Power is the most critical ingredient of effective change. These leaders of change can be seen throughout the organisational ladder. These leading change leaders can be holding any position or power variable to become an instrument of change (Evans, 2010). Organisational change management problems are often not given due attention or ignored totally. In reality, people issues are responsible majorly for get wo rd failures. Causes of Project Failure The survey undertaken by KPMG analysed the causes of failed projects. The finding closely associated project failures with behaviours and expertise of the respondents, mostly related to the capabilities, behaviour and attitudes of participants (EPM Book, 2007). Discussion Mintzberg (1984) discuses the power perspective in relation to organisation life cycle in three strides first by analysing relationships of power dissemination internally in an organisation, with that covering a sort of six assemblies of

The Chimney Sweeper Timed Write Essay Example for Free

The Chimney Sweeper Timed Write EssayThese poems have many similarities, but also have some differences. Diction, poetical techniques, and the tones of each poem argon some of the similarities and differences. The germs purpose for writing both these poems is to limn how things diversity from innocence to experience over time, and to show how it affects the people involved. These poems are similar in the way that the author uses meter, figurative language, and poetic technique. Irony is also a big part of the way the poems poop be seen as similar. In the first poem the author writes, So if all do their duty, they need not fear harm. This is ironic because if the kids do dribble their duties out, they will actually be harmed, and will not be safe as the quote implies. Similarly the author uses irony in the next poem, which shows much experience rather than innocence like the first, when he writes, Who make up a heaven of our misery. This is ironic because heaven is always t hought to be a happy wonderful place, where no one is sad or in pain or anything else of that nature.Another way these poems are similar is the way the author uses symbols. In both poems the colors white and black are used. In the first poem white hair shows the innocence, while in the second poem, A little black thing is showing the experience and how it has been stained. Other symbols in the poems include lambs, snow, and soot. These represent innocence, purity, and the stain of experience on the innocence of the children. Lastly the meters are the same in each poem, both are anapestic. These poems have many similarities to show the connection between the two different poems and how innocence will change to experience.Although these poems have many similarities, the author uses differences in each poem to show how things change, and when they change from innocence to experience things are very different. In the first poem you can almost hear a childlike playful tone, it seems as t hough the kids do not know what they are getting into and are gracious of excited about a new adventure. While in the second poem, songs of experience, the tone is darker, the kids are not excited about the adventure they are panic-stricken and know how dangerous it is.It talks more about death and criticizes monarchy and religion, as though they are blaming them for their misery and pain. Both of these tones are best described in, however the morning was cold, Tom was happy and warm This is from the first poem, they are still happy although they know they are in a danger. From the second poem, They clothed me in clothes of death, this is a very somber line and shows how the child now knows the dangers and has experienced tragedy. The author uses these differences to show us the way that, as life goes on sometimes perspectives change, and sometimes it is for the worse.

The Drivers of Globalization Essay Example for Free

The Drivers of Globalization EssayAt the dawn of 21st century, info technology, communication, transportation and even banking systems took a great leap of improvement that changed billion of lives around the world. Using a personal computer, an individual could per construct a bout of allot and banking transactions from anywhere, for as long as there is an Internet connection. People who are fond of traveling around the world could remain in contact with his families and employers, 24 hours a day, 7 days a week.Important events could now be shared by millions of viewers around the world through and through satellite connections and the use of the World Wide Web. The world became a small a neighborhood through fast delivery brought about by planing machine travel around the world, minute by minute. All of these improvements contri entirelyed to the creation of a single thread that connects billion of lives throughout the globe. That thread came to be known as globalization and it is a trend that contributed to the development of the so called global society.Globalization acknowledges the emergence of a global society in which political, economic and cultural events could slow influence the lives of people from all lots of the world. The so called global society also implies the idea of a global market which allows freer movement of goods, go, investment and capitals across the globe . The global market focuses on economic globalization, a sub field of globalization which focuses on the improvement and changes that occur in the sector of interchange and commerce.Economic globalization suggests diminishing national boundaries and territory to allow freer movement of goods and services . Tariffs and trade regulations are created to further improve and ensure that the flow of goods and services would continue and safe from illegal activities. Along with these and the improvements achieved in the field of transportation, information technology and co mmunication, the cost of transactions and operation of companies around the world and take in receptive up millions of jobs throughout the world and have reduced the cost of transactions. An example of this would be the large increase of trade and movement of capital in the form of bonds, stocks and investment. The volume of world export level from 1950 to 2001 grew 20 clippings from its original level. Analysts have also deduced that investors and shareholders nowadays are so well informed that they could comfortably manipulate their shares and capitals through Internet to enable them to gain more profit. It was eminent that the consumer himself was an influential catalyst for change however, there are other factors which contribute greatly to the development, growth and spread of globalization. It is possible that there are many reasons or factors that have caused globalization spread so fast but it would be outflank to narrow it down based on the influence and number of change s that it has brought forth towards the globalization as we know of today. As much as possible, these factors would be in touch with market and product globalization. The assessment of these factors would be the key in resultant roleing why globalization has spread so fast over the sometime(prenominal) decades. Lastly, the last part of the paper would be a reflection about the influence of globalization on the lives of normal people such as the pen of this paper.A. The Consumer and the Nature of Man In his endless pursuit of greater pleasure, comfort and perhaps happiness in life, man has always sought to improve the character of his lifestyle and everything around him. Whether it was accidental, planned or forced, man never failed to bring advancement in his daily life and to his predecessor in the future. In the archaeozoic years, man was forced to develop and improve his agricultural system and tools to look at up with the growing population and harsh environment that surro und him.The idea for powder and guns that change how wars are fought, were brought by the creation and extensive use of firecrackers by the Chinese. The Industrial Revolution for instance, was a period in which many innovations were introduced that forever changed how goods are being manufactured and also transportation services was the main attraction during that time. Personal computers, carrell phones and satellites connections of the twentieth century could connect people from any part of the world in a matter of minutes or even seconds. Even couples who are having problems in bearing children could now resolve this through soppy insemination. These are manifestations of how far man could go when he attempts to further improve his lifestyle and it is for a fact that there is no possible end on how man could go when he wishes to seek more pleasure and comfort in life. This desire of man to further enhance its current lifestyle has pushed the boundaries and possibilities of 20th century world market. Merely supplying people with basic goods and necessities is not enough for a company to stay in the business. They need to be modern about their product and they need to cite product that will capture the taste of the consumers.Even services being offer by manufacturer and companies should be top rank in order to ensure that consumers would adhere to their product. Moreover, counting the status of information technology and how easy it is to gain various amount of information, it could be consider that consumer nowadays is more informative and knows what they need not to mention how picky most of then when it comes to the quality of the product theyre going to buy. In the to the lowest degree sense, consumer itself was the one who shaped and pushed the current market to its current level.Globalization was merely a tool that helped in indulgeing the demand of consumers for product that could improve and draw off life easier. Through a freer movement of ca pitals and less restrictions concerning importations of distant goods, people across the globe was able to experience gadgets, goods, services and even infrastructure that normally could only be found in developed countries. Such conditions could be seen in countries in Asia and South America were investors from the so called 1st world countries have invested huge amount of money to penetrate and dominate local markets. When it comes to infrastructure, one example that could be found is recent spread of high class casinos and hotels in tourist destinations especially in areas such as the Caribbean, Mediterreanan and Hawaii . Globalization for a moment has satisfied the consumers needs but at the same time it has invoked greater desire for the consumers to experience and use more product that could further improve their lifestyle. Additionally, the power to avail certain kind of products such as sumptuosity cars and advanced gadgets represent the social status of consumers.3rd world countries have opened their markets to foreign investors not just to increase revenue but also to provide its people with job opportunities and improve their economy through such investments. Product Innovations It is eminent that there is no permanent product that would dominate a market for long a time. Aside from our basic necessities, everything that we use will eventually come to an end. This is why leading companies and manufacturers are forced to develop and produce new products that would interest the public and would help them stay in business.Microsoft for instance, continuously creates and develops operating systems for personal computers in order to cope up with the latest programs and computer software that are being sold in the market today. From time to time, leading cell phone manufacturer like Nokia and Samsung need to release new models of cell phone that are better that its predecessor and could offer new tricks to its user. Everything has its own evolution, eve n the tiniest gadget that we use started of from a humble beginnings and had been changed in order to cope up with the demands of the public and at the same time stay on course with regards to business operations.Through product innovations and improvement, leading companies and manufacturers could supply the public with goods that could satisfy their demands . When a product is adhered to by billions of people around the globe, leading companies turn their attention to manufacturers for possible business expansion and reproduction of their product. Manufacturers are either engage or created by those companies who personally want to manage the production of their products. Investment comes in huge amounts of money and it often creates thousands of job opportunities.Globalization comes into play during these times. Tariffs and trade regulations are lowered in order to accommodate business expansion and to give investors flexibility about theyre investment. Countries who sought to in crease their nations revenue, turns their heads to foreign investment for possible influx of money and generating jobs that could decrease unemployment level . For an instance, famous clothing lines have opened not only outlet stores but also their own factory outside of their main offices in order to meet the demands of the public.Clothing lines like Lacoste, Luis Vitton and other famous brand could now be found in various parts of the world. Michelin, the French tire company owns a factory in south California where they produce tire that would answer the demand of the local market. Globalization spread across the globe because of the opportunity that foreign investment could offer to a country. Aside from lowering the cost of foreign product through local manufacturing, foreign investment could boost the economic performance of those poor countries.

The Socio Demographic Profile Education Essay

The Socio Demographic Profile Education EssayEducation is the process of nurturing and development the skills, capacities and potentials of the bookmans to prep are them to be successful in their chosen careers. From this point of realise, reproduction is serving primarily as an individual development function. Education is constant and ongoing. It is a never ending process. Formal education usually starts at the age four where children attend school for the purposes of specific guidance related to skills and competencies that familiarity sees important. In the past, once a student finishes formal education in the tertiary level, the process was finished. However, in todays changing military nearlybodynel, individuals do not only learn at bottom the four walls of the classroom and continue to learn through divulge their working lives. In its broadest sense, education whitethorn be specify as a process substantial to instill the knowledge, skills, talents and attitudes essent ial to enable individuals to adjust and cope effectively with their environment. Its main purpose is to foster and promote the fullest self-realization for all individual. Achieving this goal requires mind of committedness to the proposition that education is a primary tool or instrument for the advancement of human welfare both on tender and economic manifestation (Verma, 1990).Ramaswamy(1990), stated that we are in the generation where the world is become to a greater extent and more competitive, exercise and quality of work has become the key factor for personalised progress and development. Every parents want the best and only the best for their children. They want their children to excel and to be on top. With this desire to excel and be on top, the wedge is not only with the students exactly with the teachers, the schools and in general the education system itself. In fact, it seems as if the whole educational system revolves around the students schoolman deed, thou gh other various outcomes are to a fault expected from the school system. Thus the school exerts a lot of time, effort and resources in helping students to achieve founder in their scholastic endeavors. The importance of donnish and scholastic consummation gave rise to important nouss for educational researchers. What factors contributes to the faculty memberian achievement of students? How do these different factors contribute towards their academic achievement?Safaya, et al. (1963) mentioned that human life, which is the ultimate creation and gift of god to humankind, has got two aspects The bio ratiocinative and sociological or cultural. While the former is maintained and transmitted by food and reproduction, the latter is preserved and transmitted by education. It is again through education that he promotes his intelligence and adds his knowledge with which he ordure move the world for good and for evil according to his wishes. Education in fact, is one of the major life processes of the human beings just as there are trustworthy infixed vital processes of life in a biological sense. So education may be considered a vital process in a social sense. Education is indispensable to normal living, without education the individual would be unqualified for group life.Every students academic achievement may be affected by various factors like intelligence, deal habits, different aspects of their personality, attitudes of the students towards school, peers, socio economic lieu, demographic pen, the school system etc. The desire to be successful is derived from individuals concept of himself and in monetary value of the meaning of various incentives as they spell success and trial in the eye of others. Thus a child who sees himself to be on top, as scholars, as successful may set as his goal the science of the highest configuration in the class.Nuthanap (2007) said that any modern society go forth not be able achieve its aim of cultural advancement , technical development and economic growth without cultivating and developing the talents of its citizens. wizard of the major purposes of education is to help children to develop their skills and those skills will help them render a better future. Teachers and counselors in educational institutions are often confronted with students who appear to have above average scholastic aptitude but are very poor in their studies. A recurring question that puzzles them is why some students win in their mull over while others do not. This question is sometimes considered to be closely related to learning than teaching. Jamuar (1974) stated that not only on good teaching methods but also good culture attitude affects the students learning. Anwana and Cobbach (1989) are also of the view that there are other factors why students do no-countly academically other than mild intellectual capacity. Tiwari and Bansal (1994) also stated if that an individual has a high academic achievement he is likely to have a better opportunity in life and low achievers will have difficulty in landing a job after graduation. In our society academic achievement is considered a basis for an individuals potentials and capabilities. then academic achievement occupies a very important place in education as well as in the learning process. academic achievement is defined by Crow and Crow (1969) as the extent to which a savant is profiting from instructions in a given area of learning i.e., achievement is reflected by the extent to which skill and knowledge has been imparted to him. Academic achievement also denotes the knowledge attained and skill developed in the school subject, usually designated by test scores. performance is influenced by personality, motivation, opportunities, education and discipline. There are several other factors also which influence the academic achievement of student like regard habit, self-concept, socio economic status, intelligence etc.Study habitsOther than low intellectual capacity, there are many another(prenominal) factors why many students do badly academically. One factor is poor write up habits, in which naturally intelligent students will have poor or low academic performance because they have bad study habits. Habits are true indicators of individuality in a person. So study habits may be defined as the behavior of an individual in relation to his studies. In the process of learning, learners habitual ways of exercising and practicing their abilities for learning are considered as study habits of learners. The pattern of behavior adopted by students in the pursuit of their studies is considered under the caption of their study habits. Study habits reveal students personality. Learners learning character is characterized by his study habits. Study habits serve as the vehicle of learning. It may be seen as both means and ends of learning.Study habits play a very important government agency in the life of students. Success or f ailure of each student depends upon his own study habits. Of course, study is an art and as such it requires practice. Some students study more but they fail to achieve more. Others study slight but achieve more. Success of each student definitely depends upon ability, intelligence and effort of students. No doubt, regular study habits bring their own rewards in the sense of achievement of success. There are many types of disadvantaged students physically, mentally, socially culturally, educationally and emotionally. The socially disadvantaged are not handicapped by transmitted deficiency, but by the socio economic circumstances of their lives. The socio economic disadvantage prevents them from developing their basic and natural potentialities. The disadvantages are not with the individual, but with the society.Study habits refer to the activities carried out by learners during the learning process of improving learning. Study habits are intended to elicit and guide ones cognitive processes during learning. According to Patel (1976) study habits include.1. Home environment and supply of work2. Reading and note taking habits3. Planning of subjects4. Habits of concentration5. Preparation for examination6. General habits and attitudes7. School environmentThe study habits are influenced by attitudes, personality traits, levels of aspirations, teaching methods adopted and material they are to learn. So, it is the effort of teachers to develop good study habits among students. Such habits are the best equipment with which they kindle live and lead their lives with confidence. If the habits are developed in the young age they will definitely cherish the joy of its fruits in the rest of their lives, because grown up children are already habituated to certain things. So they find it difficult it modify their habits and behavior. Therefore, it is better to develop study habits in secondary school students. It is the proper time and age to cultivate study habits. At t his age students are preferably matured. They are able to know what is good and what is bad. They can avoid bad things and invite good things with the help of teachers.Self-conceptAs a child grows and develops, he learns, not only just about the world about him and his place in it, but also about himself. Each person lives with himself and hence, to some degree is always alone. No one can ever completely know the self-better than anyone else, although in the pursuit for understanding oneself and others there has developed a great deal of human thought and philosophy, including psychology. Man has long held the hope of answering such questions as who am I? How did I come to be this way? And their logical consequence, the search for purpose why am I? (Nadalmani, 2001).The psychological construct, the self-concept is essentially private even though it is in part translated into action by the beliefs we express. Sidhu (1987) defined self-concept as those perceptions, beliefs, feeling s, attitudes and values which the individual views on describing himself.Personality is not a specific quality of a person but a quality of his behavior. How he behaves depends upon how he feels about himself, about other people and about his relationship with them. These feelings make up his self-concept what he thinks about himself as a person. A persons self-concept is the perfect core of his entire personality and determines the quality of behavior. It can be predicted that the poor self-concept implying lack of confidence in facing and mastering the environment, will accomplish his performance in school. In sum, the self-concept does appear to be related to school adjustment. Substantial evidence indicates that children and adults with poor self-concept when compared with those who have high self-concept are more anxious and less adjusted generally and less popular, are less effective in groups and are less honest about themselves. The pattern of parental rewards and punishment s seems to affect the self-concept and quite certainly, the self-concept of bright but under achieving youngsters are less positive than those of children who are doing as well as can be expected in school. timely children tend to couch their self-concept according to the way they think their teachers regarded them.Adolescence is a period of biosocial transition from childhood to adulthood. This period extends roughly from 12-19 years. Now a days pubescence occurs earlier than it used to be, due to improvement in nutrition and health care. This has lengthened the transition from adolescence to adulthood. A dramatic biological change occurs in adolescents. In early adolescence, they experience a growth spurt. As a result they stop thinking of themselves as children and parents begin to expect matured behavior from them. Conflicts with parents, teachers, peers and society may arise over their demands and expectations along with this task of establishing a their own identity, which involves an understanding of self, of ones relationship with others and of ones values and subprograms in society. Erickson (1981) describes this as Identity crisis. Adolescents adopt many strategies to resolve this crisis by trying out different roles like good girl / boy, dutiful daughter / son, a rebel, athlete and so on.The world is becoming more and more competitive and parents desire that their children achieve high in academics. During this stage the influence of school far outweighs all others. So good development and effective teacher guidance are of utmost importance. Performance at school and experience in the larger world are related to the self-image of students. They have to strive hard to achieve better results academically. As a result, school and studies become major stressors. Hence, adolescents tend to give up and neglect recreational activities. This has resulted in the absence of physical and mental relaxation. The best type of relaxation is one in which the s tudents learn the skill of relaxing. Schools should provide opportunities for regular physical and mental training like yoga which is a relaxation technique which will facilitate the enhancement of study habits, self-concept and academic performance (Erickson 1981). Teachers in school should become facilitators of learning. The infinite hold dear with in every learner should be discovered and nurtured. For the purpose of improving learning, effective study skills have to be taught. Study skills may involve reference, reading, listening, study habits and learning strategies. Learning improves with planning of where, when and how much to study.Nayak et al. (2004) defined teaching as not about giving information, knowledge and skills to students, but it is about giving opportunities for students to mold their personality and develop their talents and skills. The primary purpose of teaching is to assist the individual to attain his and her full potential as well as to develop the neces sary skills to cope up with the changing environment. The family, religious organizations and community also share primary responsibility in the educational process.Socio Demographic ProfileQuality of education is mostly assessed on the basis of academic performance, and achievement scores are considered to be its primary indicators. However, achievement scores alone neither provide satisfactory understanding of the causes of students success or failure, nor suggest the ways for improving the achievement. There is a need to identify and analyze the factors that can affect academic performance. The understanding of these factors can suggest some measures for improving the quality of education. explore on the academic achievement suggests that it has relationship with some demographic characteristics. For example, Jaeger Eagan (2007) and Cole Espinoza (2008) found grammatical gender differences in the academic performance of male and female students. Keith, et. al. (2006) found pos itive relationship between age and academic performance. However, Kaur, et. al. (2010) found that age does not importantly contribute to academic performance of university students in distance learning.Tuttle (2004) found that students academic performance correlates with the family household income and their place of residence. Davis-Kean (2005) found on his study that educational attainment of the parents and household income are strong predictors of academic achievement. Acharya and Joshi (2009) found that parents education can affect the achievement motivation in academic area. Yousefi, et. al. (2010) found that there is a relationship between family income and academic achievement of students. The above stated research studies indicate that some demographic factors may affect academic achievement of students. It was hypothesized that some demographic factors may be significant predictors of academic achievement of students.LocaleColegio de Sebastian, an educational institution t hat commits itself in academic excellence of the students is just a saucily school as compared to other big universities in Pampanga. As of to date there has been no research made about the students academic achievement. The researcher obdurate to conduct research in the school so as not only to help the students but also the school itself.Keeping in view the importance of study habits, self-concept, socio demographic status and academic achievement Colegio de Sebastian students was taken up with following specific objectives._ To analyze the study habits of the students in Colegio de Sebastian._ To study the self-concept of the students in Colegio de Sebastian._ To determine the socio demographic profile of boys and male and female girls studying in Colegio de Sebastian._ To know the influence of study habits, self-concept, socio demographic status on academic achievement.Research ProblemAt Colegio de Sebastian, where the research will be conducted, student applicants are selecte d based on specific academic criteria. Students should get a specific grade in the entrance exam in order to be admitted at Colegio de Sebastian.Despite these standards and the selection process, on average, 15% of all the students failed their math, science and English subjects. This is not a troubling number of failures, but it highlights the question, What factors beyond intelligence, are responsible for the variance in the academic achievement of students? What causes an intelligent student to either succeed or to fail in school? This is a question of great concern for many prospective and current students. It is also a concern for the susceptibility members who feel responsible for the students, and for the parents who have to pay the tuition fees. Myburgh, Grobler and Niehaus (1999) state that there is an increasing awareness that individual differences in intelligence alone cannot account for all, or even for the majority, of differences in academic achievement. One can conclu de that besides intellectual ability, there have to be other factors that play a role in the learning and the academic achievement of students. Other important factors include the students interests and their pursuit in various academic tasks, how they perceive their interactions with their teachers, and what they feel and think about themselves with regard to the execution of academic tasks (Sikhwari 200413). Also included here are the students attitude, their self-concept and motivation (Sikhwari 2004), self-determination (Mnyandu 2001), motivation, self-efficacy and perceived value (Nilsen 2009), stress and anxiety (Bester 2003), their socio-economic resources, parental involvement and family obligations (Areepattamannil Freeman 2008), and learning strategies (Rodriguez 2009).This study will focus on academic self-concept and study habits as factors that could influence and cause a variance in academic achievement.Research by McCoach and Siegle (2003) suggest that self-concept helps to predict academic achievement. They state that as much as one third of the variance in achievement can be accounted for by academic self-concept. Findings seem to lend support to the theory that consistent success or failure has an effect on self-concept, and that the level of academic achievement is influenced by an individuals self-concept of ability (Dambudzo 20096). The following highlights the importance of self-concept in academic achievement, when Mostert (19956) contends that a positive self-concept is one of the most vital elements for success, and because self-concept is both a personal and motivational variable, its overall contribution to the variance of academic achievement should be quite high individuals seem to be motivated to perform in a manner consistent with their self-concept.Mwamwenda (in Dambudzo 20096) states that educators generally believe that an understanding of self-concept and what it involves is essential if education is to achieve its ultimate goal of developing the individuals highest possible potential. In addition, an awareness of the role self-concept plays in human behaviour and development will enable educators to deliberately introduce ways of maximizing self-concept as an integral part of whatever they do in their interactions with learners. Marsh (in Areepattamannil Freeman 20087.5) hold ups that a higher self-concept is associated with greater academic achievement among students. There is also evidence to the contrary, namely that humble self-assessments are more conducive to academic achievement, according to Ocshe (200367), Yoon, Eccles and Wigfield (1996) and Trusty, Watts and House (1996). Despite much research, there are no conclusive studies that clearly indicate the link that joins academic self-concept and academic achievement (Sanchez Roda 2003).Existing theory and research of Deci and Ryan (in Mnyandu 20011) have shown that self-determination (intrinsic motivation, extrinsic motivation and amotivat ion) plays a prominent role in the academic performance of learners. Kushmand, Sieber and Harold (in Broussard 2002) declare that a high level of motivation and engagement in learning has consistently been linked to a reduction in the number of drop-outs, and to increased levels of student success. In any academic setting, whether it be elementary, secondary or higher education, a students motivation for learning is generally regarded as one of the most important determinants, if not the premier determinant, of the success and quality of the learning outcome (Mitchell in Broussard 20017). However, the relationship between motivation and academic achievement remains complex (McCoach Siegle 200173). Mnyandu (200111) declares that both intrinsic and extrinsic motivation, are prerequisites for academic achievement. Mnyandu (200111) considers it imperative that educators acquire a broad understanding of these different forms of motivation in order to help the learner to make use of the specific type of motivation that will facilitate his/her success in achieving the set goals. In the light of the above, the research question can be indicated as followsHow may the participants be described in terms of their Socio Demographic profile?agegendercoursefamily incomenumber of members of the familyHow may the participants be described in terms of their Study Habits? How may participants be described in terms of their Academic Achievement? Can academic self-concept, study habits and socio demographic profile predict the level of academic achievement of students of Colegio de Sebastian?Hypothesis of the StudyThere is a significant relationship between the students Academic Self-concept and Academic AchievementThere is no significant difference between the students Academic Self-concept and Academic AchievementThere is a significant difference between the students Study Habits and Academic AchievementThere is no significant difference between the students Study Habits and Acad emic AchievementThere is a significant difference between the students Socio-demographic profile and Academic AchievementAcademic self-concept, study habits and socio demographic status can be used to predict academic achievement.Academic self-concept, study habits and socio demographic status cannot be used to predict academic achievement.Significance of the StudyStudy habits, self-concept and socio economic status play a very important role in bringing about the better academic achievement. The study could bring to light the importance of academic self-concept, study habits and socio demographic profile which are the major contributors of academic achievement.Through this research, the counselor can come up with an intervention program that would help the low achievers. Students would also know the reason why they are getting low grades. Faculty members could also adjust their teaching methods for students with low academic performance.Delimitations of the StudyThe study will be confined to college students. Moreover, the study will be conducted only at Colegio de Sebastian.Academic achievement will only include English, Math and Science subjects.
